“5 Inexpensive Hobbies To Enrich Your Life”

With work taking so much of our time every day it can be hard to avoid the temptation of just zoning out in front of the TV at home, binge-watching the newest TV series, or getting lost in a downward spiral of hours of YouTube videos. But these easy activities are doing nothing to enrich your life.

It’s time to go back to simpler times and enjoy the things we and the previous generations cherished so much in decades gone by. Remember when reading 50 pages of a book was normal before bed? Or weekends when you headed out with your friends all day exploring the town you already knew so well?

Reclaim your spare time with hobbies that add to your life rather than quick fixes that are essentially a waste of time. Here are five things to take up that aren’t heavy on the pocket and will refresh your mind and body.

  1. Gardening

There’s nothing quite as satisfying as watching something you’ve nurtured and cared for flourish. Taking care of plants can be informative, relaxing and rewarding. Build your own little herb garden on your kitchen windowsill or invest in a few pots and planters if you have space on your terrace or balcony.

2. DIY Jewellery

If you are into the latest trends and love yourself a bit of DIY, making jewellery at home could be the ideal hobby to while the time away. Low-key and inexpensive, buy supplies from your local arts and crafts store or order your basics online. Get creative and use different fabrics, materials and metals.

3. Reading

If you can’t remember the last time you sat down in a quiet corner and got lost in a good read then maybe it’s time to rekindle your love for literature. Schedule an hour or two every few days, keep your phone away, make yourself comfy and curl up with something you’ve been waiting to read. If it’s been a while, start with something easy and light to get back into the rhythm of reading for pleasure.

4. Cycling

Cycling is a great way to explore your city and get a solid workout in. Buying a new or secondhand cycle doesn’t cost a lot and you’ll learn to love it as you zip through traffic jams and get transported back to your childhood by pedalling around. Plan some good routes, sites to visit and restaurants to try out and hit the road early on the weekend.

5. Restore and Renovate

For those who are handy around the house, investing your spare time in furniture restoration costs next to nothing. Scour flea markets, yard sales and second hand online stores for used pieces, get a few tools and essentials from the hardware store and you’re all set. A few weekends worth of work can result in some beautiful bespoke furniture pieces, which you could even resell online.

There are a ton more things to enjoy beyond the limits of screens and mundane after-work pub outings. Make time to rediscover the small joys of getting your hands and legs busy doing something pleasurable and productive.

  1. Great advice, Surbhi. I find it a little too easy to drop down on the couch and get lost in the television. I do love to read, and when the weather is nice, go for walks outside. When we’re away from home, my husband and I will play Yahtzee. I need to make those things my go-to activities before the TV.
